Proximate and Mineral Composition of Adansonia Digitata (Baobab) Seeds

Abubakar Yahaya, Ahmed Attahiru, And Mariyah Mahdi-adamu.

Abstract
The proximate and mineral composition of Adansonia digitata (baobab) seeds was evaluated to
determine their nutritional significance. The aim of the study was to determine the proximate
composition and mineral element profile of Adansonia digitata seeds in order to assess their nutritional
value and potential contribution to human dietary requirements. Nutrients are essential substances
required for metabolic processes and must be obtained from the diet. Adansonia digitata, widely
distributed across the African Sahel and savanna regions, produces nutrient-rich fruits that contain edible
seeds. In this study, fruits were de-husked using a clean stainless-steel knife, and the seeds were washed
thoroughly with distilled water to remove residual pulp. They were oven dried to constant weight at 70
°C, ground using a mortar and pestle, and sieved to obtain fine powder for analysis. Proximate analysis
revealed carbohydrate content of 54.14 ± 0.46%, crude protein 20.86 ± 0.22%, crude fibre 1.83 ± 0.29%,
crude lipid 17.0 ± 0.50%, moisture content 15.33 ± 0.29%, and ash content 6.17 ± 0.29%. Mineral
analysis showed the following concentrations (mg/100 g): potassium 85.83 ± 2.88, sodium 73.30 ± 2.88,
magnesium 2.40 ± 0.10, and calcium 0.38 ± 0.08, indicating the order K > Na > Mg > Ca. The findings
demonstrate that Adansonia digitata seeds are a valuable source of proteins, carbohydrates, and essential
minerals. Adequate consumption may contribute to cellular development, tissue formation, and
enhanced metabolic and structural support in the human body.
