Abstract
Urinary schistosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases that emerge and re-emerge in riverine
communities despite the efforts of mass chemotherapy made by the government to fight against the
disease. This study aims to analyse the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis among the people in the
riverine communities of Sokoto State. Ethical clearance with reference number SKHREC/10/2023 was
approved by the ethical research committee of the Sokoto State Ministry of Health, and consent was
sought from each participant. Nine hundred (900) urine samples were collected between 9:00 am and
to11:30 am and transported to the laboratory, then examined microscopically after filtration of each
sample. X² - test and ANOVA were employed for data analysis using IBM-SPSS 26.0 version at P<0.05
level of significance. Out of nine hundred (900) urine samples analysed, 35.0% (315) were found
positive with an intensity of 45.3. Prevalence was significantly associated with sample collection centre
(P=0.016), with Wamakko people having the highest prevalence (48.9%). In comparison, Kware
recorded the least infection (22.4%), people aged between 46 and 55 years had significantly (P=0.000)
the highest prevalence (46.7%) than other age groups and significantly (P=0.019) the highest infection
was recorded among the males (42.2%) than the females (26.2%). The mean egg intensity was
significantly different according to the gender (P=0.017) and age groups (P=0.011) only. Therefore,
groups that were significantly infected should be considered most while deploying mass chemotherapy
by the authority concerned in fighting against urinary schistosomiasis in the area.
